With ad:tech just around the corner, we thought it’ll be helpful to round up all the advertising- tech trends that we expect to be the buzz words at ad:tech New York this year. So that you can network (and exhibit) at ad:tech with a complete sense of what’s going on in that tough executive’s head – the one you’ve been trying to crack for a while now.

Mobile programmatic ad buying

Programmatic ad buying & tracking is one of the fasted growing ad-tech trends. With industry heavyweights stressing on the importance of engaging consumers rather than simply bombarding them with ads – programmatic is going to be ‘the’ buzz word at ad:tech New York 2016.

With increased consumer- mobile interactions, advertisers are looking to leverage video ads for targeting users on mobile.  In 2016, programmatic video ad spending is capping at $6.18 billions, which makes up for 60% of all digital video ad spendings. So, don’t forget to attend sessions at Programmatic Punch this year!

Looking to engage a platform to track and direct your programmatic media buying/ selling?

Head over to Engagemeant™ – With dedicated account management and custom ad units, you can promote your brand through engaging ad formats across all devices. Request a demo to understand how you can capture 70% of your audience base through content advertisements!

Beating ad blockers

While the hype around ad blockers will die down, that doesn’t mean they are going away. Consumers have become hyper-sensitive to ad blockers and the key to preventing them from using it is – creating a personalized user experience.

Let’s face it – as consumers, we all hate ads that are disruptive and completely irrelevant to us. The key is to balance relevant content and ads – to dispel your audiences’ hatred for ads. So if ad blockers are your major concern, we recommend attending – AD-BLOCKING on Day 1 with Andy Oaks, MD, The drum, Benjamin Dick, Director Industry Initiatives, IAB, John Montgomery, Executive VP Brand Safety, Groupm, Jim Daily, President USA & Canada, Teads TV and Michelle Zitz, Director of Global Data Solutions, The Economist.

Multi-channel advertising & exploring new platforms

Cross device targeting and tracking is another ad tech trend you need to look out for. With consumers moving in and out of platforms seamlessly, and the emergence of new ad platforms such as virtual reality – it has become more important than ever to deliver cohesive messaging across platforms.

With mobile ad and tracking are catching up, we’ll have to continue to adapt content and drop little breadcrumb reminders across all devices – to find the perfect ad mix for our consumers.

Programmatic ad buying + virtual reality + native content is definitely going to be trending at ad:tech New York this year. We recommend attending the keynote session- New Medium, New Rules : How Virtual Reality Will Transform Media and Entertainment by Guy Primus, Founder and CEO, The Virtual Reality Company

Contextual creatives and personalized content

The rest of 2016 and 2017 will be all about personalized content. So if you haven’t taken this seriously yet, start acting now!

Tailor made content is the backbone of native advertising. Do your research – invest in data to know where your users came from, what they did on which device and learn their preferences. This is the only way to stay alive in the age of programmatic – make your audience think of you as a companion rather than a marketer.

However, most small and medium players face a problem when it comes to balancing data collection and premium content generation in-house. While budget is an issue for some, content generation is not everyone’s forte.

So why don’t you consider outsourcing the content? Head over to dotWriter™ and acquire economical custom made content, that’s in line with your audience’s preferences. It’s faster, competitive and gives you one thing less to worry about!

Hyper personalization

Its all about timing, relevance and delivering ads at the right time in the buyer’s journey. Consumers expect us to know their needs and interests, but not be creepy about it. Wouldn’t you feel weird, if you saw a  Starbucks ad 5 minutes after you drove through their drive-thru?

There’s a fine line between engaging consumers with personalized content and alarming them with too much personal knowledge. We’re looking forward to the keynote session by David Cohen, President North America, Magna Global – How to Meet the Demands of an Ever Changing Customer : Insights from Leaders in the Media, Marketing and Content Business.

Highlights & Key Take-Aways From Advertising Week New York & SMX East 2016

A Quick Recap of Four Days of Awesomeness With Ad Exchange Mediastinct™ at #AWNewYork and SMX East 2016!

mediastinct_smxeast_nyc_2016

(L) SMX East New York 2016, (R) Mediastinct™ Director, Mariel Fonseca and Co-Founder, Samron Jude at Advertising Week New York 2016

Attending ad conferences has always been a great learning experience for us, with scores of talks from industry leaders, networking with talented people and simply basking in the contagious energetic vibe- Advertising Week New York and SMX East truly lived up to their reputation!

This year Advertising Week New York was special as it celebrate its 13th Anniversary and featured some remarkable keynote sessions by inspirational industry leaders, including Mark Cuban and Daymond John from Shark Tank, Sheryl Sandberg, COO Facebook, Dr. Oz and celebrities like Drew Barrymore, Founder of Flower Beauty and the Bella sisters, Co-Founders of BirdieBee.

So, What Were the Biggest Trends at Advertising Week New York 2016?

1. Programmatic buying, advertising and marketing were irrefutably ‘the buzz words’ at Advertising Week.

With over 15 sessions on Programmatic evolution, audience targeting and discussion on the future of data-driven consumer engagement – its clear that Programmatic is the way forward in the digital advertising industry.

2. Women empowerment in the digital advertising space.

With over 24 sessions dedicated to discussing sexism in the workplace, portrayal of women in ads – #Femvertising and redefining feminism in the pop culture. #AWNewYork was definitely all about women empowerment in the workplace and addressing the gender stereotypes we have created over the years. It was the a great way for brands and companies to take note of the changing roles in the 21st century.

3. Role of Technology in the digital advertising space.

Considering that the top trending topics attached to the #AWNewYork hashtag included #augmentedreality, #virtualreality and #software, its no surprise that technology and future of digital advertising was the center of discussion! With industry leaders stressing on data driven campaigns and merging technology with marketing – innovative technologies have become the new industry reality.

4. Inclusivity of Diversity.

The need for racial, gender and cultural diversity in the industry was undoubtedly the most relevant issue addressed through out the week.  With sessions like ‘The Race to Re-Unite’, ‘The Revolution Will Be Feminized’ and ‘Breaking the Mold’ – its clear that we’re becoming an industry that has finally started realizing that innovation doesn’t come from a group of homogenous people. It needs inclusion of different ethnicities and genders.

5. An obvious focus on Millennials.

With over 7 sessions dedicated to understanding and targeting millennials, its clear that they play a big role, and we need to start paying attention! The millennial audiences have the potential to make or break your campaign. To win over this powerful group, there needs to be a focus on creating creative and authentic content along with experimentation of new platforms of marketing.

Moving on, here are the highlights from all the sessions we attended at #AWNewYork;

Highlights From Advertising Week New York, 2016, Day 4

1. Good Health is Good Business

dr-oz_advertisingweek_mediastinct_2016

(L) Dr. Oz with Mediastinct™ Co-founder Samron Jude and Director Mariel Fonseca, (R), Dr. Oz on stage at Advertising Week New York 2016 with Martha Stewart

This session with Dr. Mehmet Oz and Martha Stewart, CEO of Martha Stewart Living, was an interesting conversation between the two, with Dr. Oz sharing insights about his recent survey on women’s health in America, and it’s implications for advertisers. Dyllan McGee, Founder and Executive Producer of AOL’s MAKERS, AOL was also a part of the panel.

Speaking about his businesses – the Dr. Oz Show and The Good Life Magazine, Dr. Oz shared a few data collection strategies that go into accessing people. Talking about the efforts advertisers need to make while dealing with the health care sector, he emphasized on the need for campaigns that focus on integrating humor in dealing with serious health issues.

An important takeaway from Dr. Oz’s session for all advertisers is the importance of communicating facts in a precise and thought-provoking manner, rather than dumping data on your audience and preaching to them. That’s the difference between being Dr. Oz and just any other medical practitioner preaching a healthy lifestyle to you!

2. From Divas to Superstars

advertisingweek_bellasisters_2016

(L) Bella Sisters with Mediastinct™ Co-Founder Samron Jude, (R) Nikki and Brie Bella on stage at Advertising Week New York 2016, Day 4

The twins also spoke about the upcoming launch of their brand – Birdiebee and their new show – Total Bellas on E!

While the reality show explores the daily lives of the Bella Twins, Birdiebee is a pay it forward brand that represents feminine health and women empowerment.

The second day for us, was all about mobile. The amazing sessions by Sheryl Sandberg, COO Facebook, Drew Barrymore, Actress & Founder of Flower Beauty and Harry Kargman, CEO of Kargo, on mobile advertising and targeting were particularly insightful.

And here’s some more on the other things we learnt at Adverting Week on Day 2

Highlights From Advertising Week New York, 2016, Day 1

The first day was all about establishing how important it is for all marketers and advertisers to study their data and analytics. Industry stalwarts Gregory R. Raifman President, Rubicon Project, Tim Cadogan CEO, OpenX, Scott Howe President & CEO, Acxiom, Eric Franchi Cofounder, Undertone and Mark Zagorski EVP, Nielsen Marketing Cloud shared their vision of Programmatic media evolution and re-iterated the important role data plays in creating relevant ads and content for consumers.

And Finally, here’s what we did at SMX East New York 2016!

smxeast_mediastinct_nyc_2016

From Left to Right: Exclusive Mediastinct™ Clicks from SMX East New York 2016 & Advertising Week New York 2016

SMX East New York 2016 was all about making content marketing better with latest SEO and SEM practices. It also focussed on the importance of paid content in delivering the message of a brand to a wider audience, and how to get that right.

While SMX East Day 1 was all about Google Feature Updates and campaign optimization and tag Management. On Day 2 we did a deep dive into best SEM practices, SEM for brands and exploring multi-channel consumer targeting. The last day of SMX East 2016 revolved around sessions on Mobile PPC, re-targeting & re-marketing and monitoring conversion rates & metrics.

Here are 4 Key Take-aways From SMX East New York, 2016;

1.  Consumer behavior is shifting and evolving at an unprecedented rate, in ways that we cannot predict.

Consumer behavior is no longer limited to desktop, mobile, tablet or offline, only. With new video, ‘near me’ and voice command experiences that are still evolving, consumer behavior too has evolved and shifted as a response to this big web of experiences open to them. Now they are relying on a series of of interactions and touch points (micro-moments) to form an opinion about a brand.

2. When it comes to Search Engine Marketing (SEM), constant tweaking of your message is a must!

Your SEM strategy must incorporate new and upcoming ad changes. The first advantage goes to the advertiser who can absorb publisher changes, the quickest.

Google Paid Ads is always changing. While right rail ads have already been replaced with image-based product listing ads (PLAs), Standard text ads (STAs) are also set to be replaced with Expanded Text Ads (ETAs) in January 2017. The one who adapts fastest, wins the audience!

3. Smart SEM strategies drive local conversions by optimizing for “near me” searches

With Google having observed a stark doubling of ‘near me’ searches since 2015, its a must that your SEM strategy includes a geo-targeting component.

4. Use Social Media strategies to expand your SEM strategies

While many of us still consider social media and independent operation from SEM, many speakers highlighted the successes they have had with using social media strategies to fuel their SEM strategy. They pointed out that keywords that work well on social media may work well in paid search too. Judicious use of paid social targeting can act as a powerful tool to accelerate engagement after a brand has built significant trust with a prospect.

Advertising Week New York Day 2: Sheryl Sandberg & Drew Barrymore Stole All the Attention!

By

Digital Ad Network Mediastinct™’s Key Take-Aways From Sessions on Day 2 of #AWNewYork 2016

Drew Barrymore and Sheryl Sandburg @ Advertising Week NYC 2016 Day 2

(L) Drew Barrymore and (R) Sheryl Sandberg @ Advertising Week NYC 2016 Day 2

We had yet another eventful day at the 13th edition of Advertising Week New York 2016. With over 68 sessions and networking events yesterday, Sheryl Sandberg, COO, Facebook and Drew Barrymore, Actress & Founder of Flower Beauty stole all the attention with their personal insights and innovative ideas on digital advertising.

Leadership in a Mobile World – A Conversation with Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg, GM’s Mary Barra, and P&G’s Marc Pritchard

Sheryl Sandburg from Facebook at Advertising Week NYC day 2

‘Leadership in a Mobile World’ Panel from left to right – Mike Isaac, Reporter New York Times, sheryl Sandberg, COO, Facebook, Marc Pritchard, chief Brand Officer P&G, Mary Barra, Chairman & CEO, General Motors Company

We started our day with this insightful session on how mobile has transformed the way businesses connect with customers. Here are a few key take-ways from Sheryl Sandberg’s talk, as highlighted by Mariel Fonseca, Director, Mediastinct™;

1. Sheryl Sandberg on Target Audience –

She emphasized on targeting a large relevant audience by first segmenting them into different groups, and then targeting them with different creatives and videos that are contextually relevant to that group. It’s important to create videos and ads that are not only get the message across, but also influence the consumer to alter their habits or thoughts that surround your product.

2. Sheryl Sandberg on being successful on mobile –

Sandberg spoke on leveraging video ads for targeting users on mobile. Since the default audio setting of a video shared on social media, when viewed on mobile, is off, its important to ensure that the ad still gets the message across. This can be done by creating an interesting introduction to our ad and keeping the video short and interesting.

3. Sheryl also shared P&G’s Laundry Detergent line, Ariel’s ad campaign in India – #sharethoad, emphasizing that big brands need to support a cause and focus on specific target groups to not only get their message out, but also bring about change in society.

Other speakers on the panel included Mike Isaac, Reporter, The New York Times.

Building a Brand in a Mobile-First World

Drew Barrymore on Flower Beauty at Advertising Week Day 2

While Harry Kargman provided deep insights into how great creatives are the key to capturing the attention of fast-scrolling consumers on mobile, Drew Barrymore spoke about her experience on building a brand.

“You have to put in hard work on weeknights and weekends if you want the brand to work. If other people with different ideas get in then it’s not you anymore. You need to feed off and exchange ideas with inspirational people.” – Drew Barrymore, on on building a brand

The cherry on the cake for us was attending the closing day (Day 2) of the IAB Mixx Conference 2016 and the closing cocktail hour, that gave us the opportunity to interact with other agency leaders and brand marketers.

This insightful session was held at Nasdaq Marketsite. Eric Hippeau, Managing Partner at Lerer Hippeau Ventures joined Branding Moghul and FUBU Founder, Daymond John from Shark Tank in a conversation on what it takes to be an successful entrepreneur.

Mediastinct™ Co-Founder Samron Jude and Director, Mariel Fonseca attended the session and even grabbed a chance to click a quick selfie with Daymond!

Here are a few take aways from John Daymond’s talk, for companies seeking investments –

Timing is everything” – Daymond John at #AWNewYork

1. Raising the first round of funding is the most crucial phase for an entrepreneur and his startup. A investor always wants to put his money on the right people, right approach and right product. So from an investor’s perspective the way the founders respond to the first round of investment is extremely crucial.

2. You need to know your product inside-out to make it truly DISRUPTIVE. Running a startup is not easy, you need to find that one thing that truly makes your product stand out and solves a real problem. Only then can you accelerate growth.

3. Its always important to be clear on your deliverables and focus on engaging and organic following, not just a paid one. The easiest way to achieve this? Always monitor your analytics.

4. If you can’t get an organic interest from the people, its a clear indicator of – something’s wrong!

“When it is time to target,  you make sure its converting and you are not wasting money”, Daymond John

Moving on to the next session, Branded Content Is King: Commanding An Audience Through Data-Driven Storytelling

Presented in collaboration with Financial Times, the session explored the rise and success of branded content, where data and audience insight meet journalistic instincts. It revolved around how content marketing has become a compelling advertising tool to attract and engage your audience in relevant ways, changing the shape of digital marketing. The panel of speakers included;

Ravi Mattu, Editorial Chief of Financial Times

Kaydee Bridges, VP Digital & Social Media, Goldman Sachs

Natalie Mortimer, Reporter at Drum

Trixie Ferguson Grey, Senior Partner Branded and Content Experiences, MediaCom

Mark Egan, Chief Client Officer, Maxus

Being in the digital advertising and content acquisition space with dotWriter.com, we left this session with a sense of latest practices in Branded Content. Here are a few takeaways highlighted by Mediastinct™ Director, Mariel Fonseca;

Leveraging branded content for content marketing has become crucial to digital advertising because of its sheer potential to engage and interact with the right audience in the most relevant way possible. The key is to segment your target audience into the  smallest interest groups and hit them with contextually-relevant content.

As digital marketers, it’s necessary to understand the consumer and target them accordingly, taking the efforts made by competitors into consideration. Always stay a step ahead!

The key to understanding your audience is analytics – always study your analytics and social media stats. Social media is one of the most underutilized tools in terms of relevant and contextual targeting, given its potential, we have still have loads to do!

(L) Debate Panel of Session- Programmatic Evolution, (R) Panel of Session on Branded Content Is King: Commanding An Audience Through Data-Driven Storytelling

The Next Highlight of The Day Was a Session on Programmatic Evolution, Held at Times Center stage

The 90 mins long session/debate had a panel of unique successful individuals who offered real perspective on the balance of the tech-driven ecosystem with the timeless value of great creative, big ideas, having a real game plan and quality vs. quantity. The panel of speakers included;

Betty Liu Anchor & Founder, Bloomberg Television & Radiate, Inc.

Tim Cadogan CEO, OpenX

Eric Franchi Cofounder, Undertone

Scott Howe President & CEO, Acxiom

Gregory R. Raifman President, Rubicon Project

Mark Zagorski EVP, Nielsen Marketing Cloud

The industry heavyweights shared their vision on whether programmatic has delivered on its promise and potential. The consensus? There’s way more to come, with targeting, attribution, and creative key focus. Here are few highlights from the discussion;

The industry is coming into a time when it needs to think as much as it does about technology about creative, according to Gregory Raifman, president, Rubicon.

Gregory Raifman recalled a time when there were poorly targeted ads. “Now people are frustrated that targeting is too good. We’re overtargeting, and now there’s ad blocking. We must figure out how to create a better environment to engage consumers in a more relevant way.”

“We have to help publishers, marketers, and the consumers reconstruct their relationships. Ad blocking is a fraying of the relationship.” – Tim Cadogan, CEO, OpenX

“We’re coming out of the impressions and clicks era. Viewability is getting there. We’re fans of engagement—what did people do after seeing an ad?  We like the idea of moving to the idea of attention as a metric,” – Eric Franchi Cofounder, Undertone

Overall, the debate concluded with a mutual consensus on the fact that new ad formats need to be introduced and explores over the the next 1 to 5 years for programmatic to grow. This growth needs to be supported by constant measurement and monitoring of the engagement.

Mediastinct™ at dmexco-2016-cologne

With less than a week until the 2016 rendition, we’ve put together a quick guide so that you can get maximum out of your DMEXCO 2016 experience.

What’s Trending @ DMEXCO 2016 this Year?

“Digital is everything, not everything is digital” is the slogan of this year‘s conference. Here are a few buzzwords and emerging topics of interest that we think will take center stage at the conference:

“Immersive ad experiences”

Every marketer wants to strike a balance between innovative and implementable strategies. We expect speakers and attendees to pay special attention to rich media formats that engage the consumer and draw them in, specially when it comes to mobile advertising.

“Rich, engaging creative”

8 out of 10 consumers can recall a video ad they’ve seen in the last 30 days – it’s no surprise that video marketing is the new big thing!

At DMEXCO, we think that there will be deeper exploration of the impact of sound and absence of sound in a video ad, as the default is off for most feed based apps. The impact of vertical videos is also expected to be a hot topic this year.

“Big data” + “programmatic buying”

In addition to finding new ways to of achieving high quality, accurate targeting across all mediums using “big data”. We expect there to be a lot of buzz around programmatic buying and it’s importance, as we migrate toward automated platforms.

What’s the Most Popular Session Going to be About?

DMEXCO has a strong reputation for its top-notch lineup of speakers and quality programming around an array of topics relevant to the digital marketing industry. Here are two sessions we are look forward to and recommend you to attend:

The Opening Talk – Sir Martin Sorrell in Conversation with Jack Dorsey

September 14 | 10:00am to 10:40am | Congress Hall

This session featuring not one, but two heavy-hitters – Founder and CEO of Twitter and Square, Jack Dorsey, in conversation with Sir Martin Sorrell, CEO of WPP – and is surely not to be missed!

The Campfire: Perspectives on Video

September 14 | 5:40pm to 6:20pm | Debate Hall

DMEXCO’s first ever “Unpanel” campfire discussion- where you will be in control of the discussion. Simply add your thoughts to the white board located outside the debate hall to join the conversation around video marketing and other unconventional topics.

DMEXCO 2016 booth parties: September 14 | 4:00pm – 8:00pm

No visit to DMEXCO is complete without at least one after-party. Make the most of it while you’re there –  grab a drink and network a bit more! A few after parties we recommend you to attend are;

Online Marketing Rockstars Aftershow happening on Wednesday, September 14 from 9:00pm – 4:00am

neXeps OMClub happening around the same time on Wednesday  from 6:00pm – 6:00am

If you’re not a party person, then we suggest that you get out of Koelnmesse and check out these iconic places;

Der Kölner Dom

No trip to Cologne would be complete without a visit to this Roman Catholic cathedral. A masterpiece of Gothic architecture and a UNESCO world heritage site, the cathedral is a splendid vision when lit up at night.

House of 4711

house-4711-mediastinct-dmexco-cologne-2016
